Tetbury

Tetbury StreetTetbury is located in the South of Gloucestershire on the site of an ancient hill fort where an Anglo-Saxon monastery was founded. During the medieval period it became an important area for the wool trade and its most notable building is the market house as pictured which was built in 1655. This market house is larger than some of the others in the area.

Tetbury is the home of the annual traditional woolsack race (on the Whitsun Bank Holiday Monday) in which some of the local people run through the streets and up a hill carrying a large 60 pound woolsack. It is the continuation of these types of historic events that makes Gloucestershire such an interesting place. For more information on the Wool sack  race Click here.

Near to Tetbury is Chavenage House, which is an Elizabethan manor house made from grey Cotswold stone that has been unchanged for 400 years.

Also nearby is Highgrove House, the country home of the Prince of Wales.

Tetbury is an authentic Cotswolds town that would be a good base for a Cotswolds holiday.
