Cheltenham
Cheltenham is also known as Cheltenham Spa and it is a large market town in the centre of Gloucestershire. Although it is an historic town with its charter being granted in 1226, most of the current buildings date from after 1716 when the mineral springs were discovered. Its popularity as a Spa resort can be seen in the wealth of Regency buildings for which Cheltenham is renowned. Famous Cheltonians include Edward Adrian Wilson, the Antarctic explorer who is commemorated by a statue in the town centre. Cheltenham is also a major centre for Horse Racing with the Cheltenham 4 day Festival in March highlighted by the Gold Cup being one of the major events of the racing calendar. Cheltenham also has 4 festivals a year including a renowned Jazz festival that confirms the town as a cultural centre of Gloucestershire. |
